Y12SR: Yoga of 12-Step Recovery Leadership Training
with Dana Walters
Friday – Sunday, September 25-27, 2020 | held online via Zoom
Yoga of 12-Step Recovery (Y12SR) is a holistic model designed to address the physical, mental, and spiritual disease of addiction.
The characteristics and effects of addiction could easily be described as separation. Addictive behaviors disconnect us from ourselves, our loved ones, our environment and so much more. Conversely, yoga itself means union, integration, balance. Yoga and its practices teach the fine art of balancing our multidimensional lives while living in a complex world.
Yoga of 12-Step Recovery was created as a holistic model to address the physical, mental and spiritual dis-ease of addiction. Informed by the latest research in neuroscience and trauma healing, Y12SR “connects the dots” by combining the somatic approach of yoga with the cognitive approach of the 12-step recovery model – the most well-known addiction recovery program in the world, with millions of active practitioners.

In the Y12SR Leadership Training we:
- Create safe, sacred, open, inclusive space that welcomes all those dealing with their own addictive behavior or are affected by the addictive behavior of others.
- Understand the 12-step process of addiction recovery as well as recognizing the symptomology of unresolved trauma, and a dys-regulated nervous system.
- Use yoga and its practices to provide relapse prevention tools and sustainable ways for managing internal states.
- Take advantage of teachable moments, help resolve ambivalence and work with those who are struggling emotionally.
- Use social learning theory to model new behavior through observational learning.
- Recognize the traps of projection, transference, countertransference, boundary violation, spiritual bypass, arrogance.
- Work collaboratively within the group setting and with institutions.
- Develop a network of professionals including trauma experts and others in the addiction/recovery treatment field.
This training is designed for yoga teachers wanting to work with the recovery population. It is also found to be extremely relevant and helpful for therapists, counselors, social workers, probation officers and others with a desire to understand how the ancient philosophies and practices of yoga align with the 12-step program of recovery.

Dana has represented PYR at YSC’s Annual Conference at Omega Institute since 2014.
With family history and a personal journey with addiction and recovery, Dana found herself inspired by instructors with a similar path. She became a Y12SR leader in 2011 and has offered Y12SR meetings in Richmond as part of PYR’s outreach ever since. In 2015, she became a Y12SR trainer after completing a mentoring program with Nikki. |
She is honored to share the practices of Yoga and 12 Step Recovery with the world, through Y12SR, and to show how an ancient and sacred practice, applied mindfully to the human condition, can bring integration, wholeness and healing to an often disconnected, challenging and troubled world.
